Hida Sashiko L.T.D
What "Sashiko" is...
More than several decades ago, Hida area did not have any public transportation system in such a circumstances by surrounded by high mountains. Therefore, it was very difficult to have cloths and textiles. As the result of its difficulty, most of fabrics were made by our hands. Originally, women was in charge of weaving the fablics from hemp and cotton, and coloring them by their hands.
Since nobody did not have skills to dye the fablics with beautiful patterns, women worn simple product with mono-colors such as navy blue or ocher. Young women, who have tried to make products more beautiful, started to make patterns by taking up a stitch by a stitch. This tradition had become popular among women, and the process produced the beautiful pattern so we call "Traditional Pattern."
Not only do those stitches represent beautiful patterns on clothes, stitches also made the clothes stronger in terms of lasting longer as one generation to another generation. We still can see "Traditional cloth", which was made in Edo Period when Samurai was going around, and those prove Sashiko's beauty as well as heritage.
"To inherit the Sashiko Culture, and integrate with Japanese modern culture."
